Spring is here and more then likely you will be tackling your closet soon. Staying in that cleaning mode, move right on to clean and organize your make up drawer, closet, basket, box – wherever it is you have all your make up and skin care. Use the same rule that most of us use, or should use, when cleaning and organizing our closets. If it has not be worn in a year donate it and if the make up/skin care has not been used in a year, trash it.
We all know this, but it is important to review every once in a while………….
Toss your mascara every three months. Bacteria grows quickly within the tube and if you pump the brush, it happens even quicker.
Pencil eyeliners are the best because they stay fairly clean as you sharpen the points. If you use gel eyeliners the brush should be washed often. Sponges should be washed every week and replaced every month and the usual recommendation is to wash all brushes every two months. I wash my brushes once a week. Take them in the shower and use a little shampoo or hair cleansing cream. Easy.
Water based foundations should be tossed after a year as the water allows bacteria to grow in the bottle. Oil based foundations will last up to 18 months.
Powders will last for 2-3 years, but keep those brushes and fingers clean.
Skin care should be trashed after 2 years, especially any jars. Anything that fingers touch can develop bacteria very quickly.
Lipstick, lip gloss and lip pencils are good for about 3 years. However, lip product and eye product should be tossed if worn during an illness – strep or pink eye for example.
Nail polishes will last 2-3 years if the necks of the bottles are kept clean so that the caps fit tightly and they are stored in a dark, cool place.
Sunscreen for face or body should have an expiration date on the box.
Anything that smells – get rid of.
Easy peasy.
Peace
