Revlon Colorstay Nail Polish

We all do posts on nail polish, actually multiple posts, as most of us that blog love, love, love to put color on our nails. We have many, many little bottles from many different brands to play with and play we do. Some we love, some are okay and some are not so much, but trying different lines is definitely part of the fun.

I think most of us are very happy that acrylic nails are no longer part of fashion. I think that we do miss the fact that our polish may have worn a little on the tips, but when we wore acrylic nails we never had chipped polish. With natural nails you get about 24 to 48 hours before the polish starts to chip depending on what you are doing with your hands. Not only does it look ugly, but where does the chipped polish go? I always worry that it is ending up in the food I am preparing – yuck! Every couple of days we need to redo our manicure.

Then came gel polish that hardens under an LED light. Gel manicures are supposed to last about two weeks (I never got two weeks), needs to be soaked of with pure acetone and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to remove. Soaking in acetone dries out the nails and skin, but more importantly, after about two gel manicures the nails start to soften, just like with acrylics, as they cannot “breath”. When the gel starts to lift, it is very tempting to peel it off. When you do that, a layer of the nail comes with the gel. If your nails get a little too long for your style you cannot file as the seal will be broken and the gels will lift. The gels look beautiful, but there are a lot of negatives and perhaps the biggest one is price. In my area a gel manicure goes for $30.00 to $45.00 not including tip. Pretty pricey when it needs to be done every two weeks.

I kept seeing advertisements in beauty magazines for Revlon’s Colorstay Nail Polish. The beautiful movie star model always had an on trend color on and her nails looked, of course, gorgeous. The ad said that you got a gel-like shine and wear for up to 11 days (when worn with the Colorstay base and top coat) without an LED light and it removes like any other polish. Not bad, but I didn’t believe it.

The Fall is here and I want some wear time out of the rich, saturated colors I love so much. I caved. A local drug store had a BOGO half off sale so I purchased the base and top coat and three colors – Red Carpet, Bold Sangria and Stiletto (red, purple, black).

I tried Red Carpet and did just a basic manicure, nothing extraordinary, remembering to wrap all the polishes around the nail tip. The polish is thick, but dries very quickly and the brush is flat and wide so with three stokes the nail is covered. Thirty minutes later I was using my hands – period. I had Red Carpet on for five days and took it off because I wanted to try another color. Absolutely NO chipping, none. I got some wear, but nothing noticeable unless I looked at my fingers in a magnifying mirror.

Next I decide to use the base coat, Chanel’s polish in Black Pearl, a beautiful gunmetal grey, and the top coat. Five days with NO chips. I did another polish change, this time using Chanel’s Vendetta..  This is now day four and it still looks great.

In the past few days I have done all the things I normally do – take care of the dogs, clean, do laundry, shop, make dinner, play with the grandkids, etc, but I have also decorated the house for Halloween, washed windows and done lots of keying on the computer. When it was time for a little fun, my nails still looked great.

I am excited that the base and top coat work with the polishes I love and I don’t necessarily need to use the Colorstay polishes.   Try it. you will have a beautiful manicure for at least five days and more.

Fried Smashed Potatoes

Filed under: Recipes — moonstruckinjersey @ 9:29 AM

by thebestfoodblog.com

So these incredibly yummy potatoes are equally incredibly easy to make. I made these below today to blog about, but they are also a perfect solution to left over baked potatoes you might have now that the weather is cooling off, and heartier dinners are in the future for our kitchens.
Whether you are starting with leftovers or not, you need cooked potatoes for this. I have only usedrussets, but any starchy white potato should work. Here is what you will need to do
Start by heating about 2-3 inches of olive oil in a pot over medium high heat.
Then take your cooked potatoes (about one or one and a half per person) and cut them in half. Then pull them apart with your hands to get that rustic, smashed look.

Now take your potato pieces and role them in corn starch. No need for egg or water or anything. Just roll the potatoes in the corn starch and let them get a good covering all around. Don’t worry about them falling a little apart, it will be good to have different sizes because the little ones will get extra crunchy, and the bigger ones will get nice and soft on the inside.

When your oil is ready, drop in your potatoes. You can test the temp by dropping in a small piece of potato and see if it starts to bubble up in the oil. You want it hot but not too hot. You want then to take about 7-10 minutes to turn brown, This way the inside of the potato get supper soft like a mashed potatoes, and the outside has time to get really crispy.

When they are gold, they are done!
Take the potatoes out and let them drain on a paper towel. As they drain, hit them with some kosher salt, cracked black pepper and a little chopped parsley for color.
As they cool they will get a little crispier and cool to perfection!!
Please let me know if you try them and what you think.
They are another easy way to take something boring and turn it into something to make your friends think you are a master in the kitchen!
And as always… don’t forget to add in a little love!!
Enjoy!

Tarte Egyptian Black Kohl Waterproof Eyeliner and Brush

Filed under: Musings — moonstruckinjersey @ 7:53 AM

http://www.qvc.com – $22.00

I have had love affair with black eyeliner my whole make up wearing life.  It is a very committed relationship.  Pencils, powders, creams, gels – I own and use them all and this is the newest addition.

The description is that Tarte has infused the same carbon black pigments that can be found in the line’s Lights, Camera, Lashes! Mascara into a creamy, long wearing eyeliner.  Tarte also states that Black Kohl is a great inner rim liner.

This eyeliner is highly pigmented, very intense, very blackest black – which I love.  It is creamy so there is absolutely no pulling on the eye and makes it very easy to apply.  The double ended brush is the perfect tool for lash lines and the inner rim.  The brush is very fine so that you can dot between the lash if you like the look.

Beside the word ‘kohl’, the word ‘waterproof’ caught my attention.  I have spent a lot of money on eyeliners claiming to be waterproof, but have disappeared within hours of application and I have not come across an eyeliner that actually was visible on the rim of my eye for any length of time.

I have year round allergies, both indoor and outdoor, and my eyes are always tearing.  This eyeliner did not disappear or fade until I removed it.  Also, the inner rim held the liner.  It was not as black as when first applied, but lasted about 4 hours before it was completely gone – enough time for a casual evening out.  Amazing for someone like me who usually cries it off immediately.  Oh, and no raccoon eyes.

This, ladies, is a good one.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Call of the Wild Limited Edition Palette

Filed under: Makeup — moonstruckinjersey @ 8:24 AM

From: http:/www.qvc.com – $36.00

The Details:

This limited edition palette features eight full sized Amazonian Clay shadows.  The Amazonian clay works to nourish the lids and reduce surface oil.  It also improves texture and allows for an easy application and longer, truer wear.

Colors Included:

  • Meow – shimmering gold
  • Jungle – shimmering bronze
  • Wild – shimmering plum
  • Instinct – shimmering champagne
  • Primal – soft matter gray
  • Roar – matter cobalt
  • Call – rich petal pink
  • Lynx – soft matte taupe

The Bottom Line:

I enjoy wearing Tarte eyeshadows because the shadows are on until you remove them.  This collection is a group of neutral colors that can be blended for the perfect daytime look or, surprisingly, a fabulous evening look.

The shadows not only blend easily, but there is no tugging on the lid when applied.  The Amazonian clay allows you to skip the primer, if you choose, as it will absorb any oil on the lids.  I love the shimmer shadows in this palette as it is just enough to be visible, but I don’t look like an old lady trying to be 20 years old again😊  The Plum and Bronze are my favorite shimmers and the cobalt is great for a sexy smokey eye.

The shadows are encased in spotted animal print, gold tone patent leather like material – including a full size mirror for application.  If pretty coming out of your handbag is important, you will love this.  It is a great compact for travel whether it goes into your handbag for day to day wear or on vacation.  You will find both looks and more with this beautifully versatile palette.

Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter

Filed under: Beauty — moonstruckinjersey @ 8:51 AM

From:  http:/www.sephora.com – $35.00

The Details:

Josie Maran’s signature ingredient is blended into a creamy butter.  Argan oil is rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids which have antiaging properties.  This organic ingredient is know to help and prevent dehydration.  This butter will enrich and nourish skin and indulge the senses with a subtle all natural aroma.

The whipped butter offers two options – Sweet Citrus and Vanilla & Apricot.

Formulated Without:

  • sulfates
  • synthetic fragrances
  • synthetic dyes
  • petrochemicals
  • phthalates
  • GMOs
  • triclosan
  • parabens

The Bottom Line:

Luxurious!  The consistency of this butter is like fresh whipped cream and hydrates beautifully without being sticky and tacky.  It absorbs very quickly for easy dressing and your skin will feel soft and smooth.  The scent is very light – I have Sweet Citrus –  and will not interfere with other scents.  I love that this cream has absolutely nothing unnatural in it.

This butter is well worth the price as it delivers.  Definitely a repurchase.

Tarte BB Cream

Filed under: Makeup — moonstruckinjersey @ 9:01 AM

From:  http:/www.qvc.com  – $31.12

The Details:

This is for anyone looking for the perfect canvas for makeup application.  It is long wearing, oil free, antiaging tinted treatment primer that offers light to medium buildable coverage that helps even skin tone and imperfections.  The silky formula goes on smooth and blends easily giving a natural looking flawless finish.  The BB Primer helps to diffuse light and minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pores.

The Bottom Line:

I had never tried a BB cream until Tarte as I really didn’t feel the need.  I use antiaging product, a primer, I have a favorite foundation and tinted moisturizer so I was good.  I love the Tarte line, so when I saw this I thought perhaps I would start here.  Comes in three options: light, medium and tan.  I chose medium as that is what I normally purchase in foundations and tinted moisturizers.

I was very impressed.  The product went on very smoothly and felt like velvet to the touch.  It just melts into the skin without feeling heavy and sticky. I wore it alone on a no make up day and it gave my skin a near flawless look.  It is a matte finish that lasts all day without any touchup.  It is not a concealer, but did a great job of covering some darkness I had near the eyes.  It, given the name, may be worn under foundation, but that is not how I will be wearing it as I like a natural look and never build on my foundation application.  However, because this feels like silk on the skin, I think it would be perfect, without being heavy, when used under foundation for extra coverage.

The only thing I did not like about the product was that there is no SPF and I need to add my own.  There are lots of western BB creams available with SPF so I will probably try one of those the next time around, but if SPF is not important to you, I would highly recommend as it delivers as advertised.

Bear Naked

Filed under: Beauty — moonstruckinjersey @ 8:36 AM

Today I would like to write about something that is just simple and useful.

From:  http:/www.sephora.com– 30 wipes at $12.00

Bear Naked Wipes remove makeup and impurities from face and eyes with a blend of aloe vera, chamomile, cucumber and vitamin E.  The wipes are free of fragrance, parabens and petrochemicals.  The wipes are soft, biodegradable and gentle on eyes and skin.

In support of the National Resources Defense Council’s Polar Bear SOS initiative, a portion of the proceeds from every package sold will go to protect the endangered animals.

Quick Take:

I have to admit that I purchased these for the first time because I liked that fact that the company was donating to save the polar bears.  I also liked that the product is natural.  I  did test to see if the wipes actually removed makeup and eye makeup, I wear a lot of eye makeup, and they do exactly that and very well.  I did not have to scrub my eyes out of their sockets to get the eyeliner and mascara off!  Having said that, I don’t use them to remove makeup at the end of the day.  My favorite way to use them is when putting on makeup.

I have posted numerous times that I like to use my hands and fingers when applying makeup, except for blush.  I do know about sponges and brushes and actually own many of them and occasionally use them, but I am literally hands on. So, I use a wipe every morning to remove the foundation off my hands and to clean my fingers as I am applying different color shadows.

I use gel liners and they dry down quickly, but if I make a mistake I press a cotton swab into the cloth to moisten the swab slightly and just gently wipe it away.  I use a cloth to clean the liner brush when I am finished so the next day it isn’t crunchy.  On the occasion that I use an eye shadow brush, I clean that as well so the next time I need it there is no residue of another color.

We all have our quirky habits when it comes to beauty and these wipes work well with mine.  Good for the skin and the planet.  Big recommend.

Rouge Dior Lipcolor

From:  http://www.sephora.com  – $32.00

What it is:

An ultra-nourishing, long-wearing formula, in a haute couture color.

What it does:
This extraordinary lipstick does what most long-wearing lip colors do not. It dresses your lips in voluptuous, long-wearing color, while simultaneously providing definition, moisture and nourishment to the lips.

What else you need to know:
Rouge Dior Lipcolor is available in luminous shades, each of which is luxuriously packaged in the House of Dior’s signature Cannage pattern with a bejeweled Christian Dior emblem.

Research results:
-89% of women had more hydrated lips.
-96% of women had improved definition on the lips’ outline.

Quick Take:

As I mentioned before, I love a red lipstick.  It is my go to color, my signature color.  You will find me wearing it 9 out of 10 times and yes, I wear it during the day.  I do not feel it is a night only lip color.

I purchased Blazing Red, which is a vibrant orange red and Favori Red which is a cherry red.  These colors are gorgeous!  Highly pigmented, bold, creamy and moisturizing.

The lipstick goes on very smoothly without tugging, pulling or caking even though it is a long wearing lipstick.  It provides moisture for hours, but it does not look like a gloss.  I found that my lips looked plumper, well defined and younger, doing exactly what Dior says it does.

One of the things I especially liked was that I got about fours hours wear before it started to fade, but when it did, it faded evenly so my lips did not look patchy or dry.

The price is high, but the lipstick is fabulous and does exactly what Dior claims.  Worth the price and a repeat purchase.

Frumpy – Why?

Filed under: Musings — moonstruckinjersey @ 8:47 AM
Tags: , ,

I told my husband that I was thinking about cutting my hair and his response was – okay.  I told him I wanted a real opinion – he said “I like both looks on you.”  I said choose and know that it will not upset me, I just want your thoughts.

“Okay, I love it when your hair is short.”  I asked him why and he said “Your personality is edgier, more rock n’ roll, when you hair is short and that’s how it was when I met you and the first 9 years of our marriage.  I like that about you.”

Wow!  He was absolutely right, though, and I realized that about a month ago.  Every time I looked in the mirror I really didn’t see myself or feel like myself.  I knew I had tucked a facet of my personality away.

My friend and I went into New York City to keep appointments with our stylist, my son-in-law, Paul Cucinello at Chris Chase Salon in Chelsea.

Told Paul how I was feeling and how much I hated that my hair just hung there like everyone else’s.  I hated that beach waves, messy buns, top knots and exaggerated pony tails were being worn by everyone.  Long hair is safe – almost everyone thinks it’s sexy and you don’t have to think about it, just tie it back.   I told him what my husband had said and that I felt like it was true because I had many different short haircuts over the years, but they never looked like someone else’s hair and they all had en edge that people, even strangers, commented on.  NO ONE ever commented on my long hair.

Now I didn’t change the way I dressed or my makeup as my hair got longer, so it wasn’t that.  I have black hair, my favorite things to wear are always in black.  I love black boots, black bags and 4” wedges.  I like big hoops and chunky bracelets. I wear a smokey eye, red lipstick and red nails.  I have amazing tattoos – perhaps you have the picture.  Still wasn’t feeling it.

Paul’s take was that I did the long hair thing and  it was time to go because it was no longer a fun accessory.  I agreed, but was very scared.  I think every person who has ever grown a short haircut out knows that feeling you get in your stomach when a stylist comes near your head with a scissors.  I trust him so I told him to do what he wanted………

He cut off nine inches of hair and even with wet hair, I could see the difference and feel the difference.  When it was styled, it was amazing.  One of the other stylists who has watched all my different styles over the years, including the long hair, commented how I was back…and used the edgy word again.

I now have a long bob, just grazes my shoulders.  There is lots of movement and I can wear it smooth, flipped on the ends, curly (natural) and I can still wear it up in any way I choose.  The best thing is that it now has personality and style.  One thing made a huge difference in how I was feeling about myself.

The point in telling my little story is that it got my friend and I talking on our way home about how I had been feeling frumpy – it didn’t make any difference how the makeup looked or the clothes or anything else – I felt frumpy and I guess I was acting frumpy.  She said she had felt that way for a while and this Summer something just fell into place and she started to dress differently.  She felt really good about her new look and she loved that her hubby was noticing it.

So, our conversation was about why women, no matter what age or size, let themselves get into a rut and stay there.  They don’t like the way they look – clothes, makeup, hair, whatever it is – but so many women do nothing about it.  Take a shower, brush you teeth, get dressed and put your hair in a pony tail.  Done. The reason for the no nonsense look is no time – kids, work, home, too pudgy, too thin, etc, but doing something for yourself takes only a couple of minutes and it doesn’t cost a fortune.

Get rid of all the clothes with stains and holes and replace them.  Kohl’s, TJ Maxx, Target, these are all great places with great deals.  We all have makeup under the bathroom sink, put it on. It only takes five minutes and it can be done while having a cup of coffee.  Whether you have short or long hair, it needs to be trimmed routinely to keep the style fresh.  Invest in hot rollers and roll your hair before you put on your makeup.  Okay, invest ten minutes for hair and makeup – get up ten minutes earlier.

This is a vain conversation – absolutely – but, really, who isn’t a little vain?  But it is not just about vanity.  We as women need to care for ourselves and take time for ourselves.  When you feel good mentally it effects your whole day and those around you.  Take care of yourself, show yourself a little love, put on some lip gloss and a new tee shirt (jeans, shoes, whatever). You will feel awesome because you were ballsy enough to break out.  I promise you it will put a little dance in your step and a smile on your face and that smile can change someone’s life.

Hey, everything we do has an impact…….

hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick

From:  http://www.sephora.com– $28.00

What it is:

A richly pigmented and silky smooth matte lip color that delivers 14 hours of continuous wear without flaking or dryness.

What it does:

The proprietary blend of advanced polymers in this liquid lipstick delivers intense, vibrant color with exceptional longevity. Skin-conditioning emollients, antioxidant fruit extracts, cili fruit, goji berry, and vitamins A, C and E help to protect the lips throughout the day.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
– Parabens
– Sulfates
– Synthetic Fragrances
– Synthetic Dyes
– Phthalates
– GMOs
– Triclosan

Suggested Usage

  • Lips must be bare to ensure optimal coverage.
  • Apply and allow to set for one minute.

Quick Take:

This is the first product that I have purchased from hourglass and it is a new addition to the line.  I love a red lip so I chose Icon which is a true and vibrant blue red.  Looks like an old Hollywood red.

Applys very easily without dragging.  It has a creamy texture and feels moisturizing on the lips.  When it dries down it does not feel thick or cakey. No bad smell or taste – things that are important to me as I am very sensitive to scent.  This is a matte finish so if you want to add gloss make sure it is completely dry.

A little of this lipstick goes a long way. I found that after about 6 hours of wearing, it started to fade, but in an even vs blotchy way.  I reapplied after about 8 hours of wear, which I was very happy with as I have had long wearing glosses and lipsticks that need to be applied within an hour.

I love, love, love this lipstick and think Icon is brilliant.  Did I mention I love?  I know this will be one of my go to colors for Fall and Winter 2012.  Big recommend.
