Naked Skin

Who isn’t always on the hunt for the perfect foundation? I am one of those people who absolutely hates the feel of makeup on my skin and I have spent way too much money trying to find something that not only feels good, but looks good.

Every once in a while I would find a foundation that I thought was it, but as time passed, it just didn’t work. Another short term find – powders, compact foundations and liquid foundations – in the give away bag.

I found Naked Skin by Urban Decay by accident while looking for something else at Sephora, so I decided to give it a try.

There are many shades available so you should have no problem matching your skin tone. I have a light olive toned complexion and I purchased 4.5 which is a medium-light shade, beige with rose undertones and it is perfect.

What it is:

It is also peptide infused.

My Experience

Naked Skin has a very thin texture so make sure you shake the bottle well. I find that 1/2 pump is more then enough for me. My fingers are my best tools and this goes on very easily without having to tug and pull at the skin. Occasionally, I will apply and buff with a brush. It is a beautiful semi-matte finish no matter how you choose to apply. Best of all, you do not feel it – really is weightless.

I found that it did even out the skin tone and gave my skin a glow and to my eye, it didn’t look like I had foundation on. So many foundations claim to do this, and do, but 4 hours later the skin looks blotchy. Did not happen with Naked Skin. It not only evened out the tone, but covered the redness around my nose and lasted all day and into the evening – even in the 100 degree temps and high humidity that this Summer is throwing at us.

One thing to note, there is no sunscreen in this foundation; so please, after you moisturize, put your own sunscreen for the face on and once that dries, put on Naked Skin.

The other day I was at the Dior counter purchasing a little goody for the Fall. The woman who was helping me kept staring at me to the point that I started to feel uncomfortable. I thought there was something wrong and she just didn’t know how to tell me.

Finally, she said “your skin is beautiful”. That is so much nicer to hear then ‘what makeup are you wearing?’.

A big recommend for everyone. You get semi-matte, flawless coverage, glow-y skin that lasts all day and people trying to figure out why your skin looks so good.

My Name is Linda……

…..and I am a beauty addict.

I read someone’s blog the other day and she said that she kept lists of all the products she hoped to try (purchase) and she wanted to know if that was weird?

I am sorry that I don’t remember the specific blog, but if you happen to see this I want you to know that, no, I do not think it is strange.

I used to keep a written list when Day Runners were in vogue. Now I have a decorative box filled with glossy pages torn from style magazines with pictures of all kinds of beauty and skincare products ( and clothes) that I want to try. I also use my iPhone to take pictures of anything that catches my eye when I am out.

I like to click around http://www.sephora.com and I also check in on http://www.qvc.com routinely to check on what’s new as they have one of the best skincare and makeup departments around. We are not speaking about drug store brands.

Although, you can find some very nice products in your local drugstore.

Oh, and I never trash New Beauty magazines.

Now, I am fully aware that there is no way I could ever afford to purchase all these things, but it is fun to dream. In the meantime, I choose wisely.

I said I was addicted.

I would add to this list. We have a pug, Luciano, and pugs have facial folds. If these folds are not kept clean they start to smell, and worse, become infected. I use Agran Oil on Luciano’s facial folds and it does a wonderful job of keeping the folds clean, moisturized and healthy. Luciano actually likes his morning facial.

Also, a drop on a q-tip removes any makeup application mistake without having to start all over again.

I use multiple products from one skincare line, which I think is a little unusual given the amount of products available, but these products definitely work for me so I am faithful to the brand; however, on those evenings when I am too lazy or too tired to go through the whole routine, after cleansing, of applying serum, eye cream, face moisturizer and neck cream or in the mornings when I am feeling rushed………..I reach for Argan Oil and know that my skin will be protected and moisturized in one step. The oil is not heavy or greasy, it absorbs instantly and foundation goes on beautifully.

In the Summer I often use it in place of my favorite serum, moisturizer and eye cream during the day because, with the heat and humidity, I don’t like the feel of multiple products on my face.

Oribe Shampoo For Brilliance & Shine

I have gone between short and long hair almost all of my life and I like wearing both. In May of 2009 my son-in-law, NYC’s famous stylist and master colorist, Paul Cucinello, and I decided to cut my hair. I had just below the shoulder length hair and we started small, but by January 2010 I had the shortest haircut I had ever had in my life, about 1/2” to 3/4” all over. It looked awesome and, of course, was a breeze to care for. The reason I did this was because my hair was so dried, so fried from other “professionals” over processing, that it looked awful and it was completely unmanageable. Paul had been doing a single process (instead of the highlights, lowlights, burn my hair lights) since the first time I sat in his chair and it definitely helped by not adding insult to injury, but I still was not happy with my hair; so, snip!

Just as quickly as we cut, I wanted to grow, so the process started in February 2010 and is ongoing as I write. I now have hair that reaches to the middle of my back and Paul is still doing only single process color. My hair color is the blackest that money can buy – a blue black and it is shiny and very healthy. Yes, you read correctly, I have shiny black hair. Not something you usually see.

If I could, I would try almost every beauty product on the market, but since I , like most people, have very little disposable income; well, you get it.

Given that, every once in a while I like to explore products that are not $100.00 for a sample size. Right now I am obsessed with shower gels. This is what you will find in my shower now.

Volume Maker

Anyone who has a passion for beauty knows that Shu Uemura was nothing less then a genius. Shu Uemura Art of Hair is most assuredly living up to the legacy.

Shu Uemura Art of Hair has developed a styling powder that is distributed to the hair by, what looks like, a makeup brush. Volume Maker is a fragrance free, invisible texturing powder.

Volume Maker does exactly what the name says, but it also instantly lifts the root of the hair and adds texture. The powder is made up of very fine particles which, unlike other volumizing products, does not leave a white residue.

The delivery system is unique, much like YSL’s Touche Eclat or By Terry’s Touche Veloutee. This design gives volume and texture to hair with just a few clicks.

On dry hair neatly separate where you want to have volume. Place the powder brush at the root area. Click and stroke side to side. With fingers, massage to distribute. Tip: For add volume, backcomb the hair after applying the product.

I have a a few texturing products that I enjoy using, but when I want to “thicken” my fine hair for an up-do of any kind – top knot, messy bun, exaggerated pony tail – this is my go to product. Love it.

My tip: I also put a little on my hands and massage it into the back of my head going under the hair toward the scalp. It gives the hair just a little lift so that whatever is hanging down my back looks thick and piecey.

This is a keeper.

butter LONDON

I love nail polishes, who doesn’t, so I am always looking for the next new best.

I, like everyone else, think OPI is a great brand and it’s usually what I purchase along with an occasional investment in a great Chanel polish. Lately, since I no longer do acrylics or gels, I have been looking for healthier polishes to go along with my healthy nails. I have tried Zoya numerous times, and it is “4 free” (it has no formaldehyde, toluene, DBP or camphor), but it has absolutely no staying power.

Next I found Julep, also “4 free”, and I joined their Julep Maven, a box of polishes mailed to you each month. Great colors and the bottle and brush were easy to use. I don’t always polish my fingernails, but I used the polishes for a couple of months on my toes and they looked great. I go to a salon for my pedicures and the nail tech did tell me the polish was a little thicker then she was used to working with. When I did decide to polish my fingernails, my experience was less then satisfactory. The polish was so thick that I found it very difficult to apply, but the real problem was that my nails took almost two hours to dry……. but they were actually still soft after all that time and as soon as I started to use my hands, the polish was a mess. I am thinking that the pedi took that long to dry as well, but I just didn’t realize as it is flip flop season.

I called Julep and canceled my subscription. I now have eight bottles of polish I will never use again.

Then I started reading about butter LONDON, http://www.butterlondon.com

butter LONDON was founded in 2005 by Sasha Muir and it developed a passionate cult following by transforming catwalk trends into custom nail lacquers. In addition to creating a range of bold, runway-ready hues, the London based brand was a pioneer in selling non-toxic nail formulas in the United States. All butter LONDON lacquers are “3-free” – meaning they are formulated without formaldehyde, toluene and DBP.

I found butter LONDON on QVC.com and at Sephora.com and every review was better then the last. (I should have read the reviews before purchasing Julep – usually I’m a little smarter then that.) I made my first purchase from QVC, http://www.qvc.com , as I knew that if I didn’t like it, used or not, I could return it. butter LONDON offered a starter kit of Nail Foundation Flawless Basecoat, a choice of color and Hardwear PD Quick. Just an FYI, QVC is not selling individual colors at this time.

As I mentioned, most of the time I wear my nails without color, but I always have color on my toe nails. When I do feel in the mood for a little color, it would be nice to get a few days wear out of it. Three or four days would be perfect as by then I am bored and looking to change the color. That is exactly what I got with butter LONDON.

The bottle and brush are easy to use. The Nail Foundation, in the bottle it looks exactly like foundation for the face, is the base and gives the nail a smooth sueded look. I would even wear this on its own for a matte look. The polish I chose was Yummy Mummy, which is a neutral beige – something I never wear – but have now fallen in love with. It went on beautifully and each coat dried within two minutes to the touch. I then used the topcoat, Hardwear PD Quick, which gave the nails a shiny coat that was almost dry instantly. Within fifteen minutes of starting the mani, I was done and gently using my hands without damaging the polish.

I had this color on for almost five days before I took it off to try another color – no chips – and I used a 10X magnification mirror to check. I get about three days wear from OPI..

I cooked, cleaned, keyed on a computer, walked the dogs, did laundry, etc, etc and it lasted!

I have since tried Big Smoke which is a gorgeous midnight blue, Chancer which is a beautiful red, the limited edition Heavy Medal Metallic Trio which consists of gold, silver and bronze metallic polishes and Wallis, which is an olive khaki. These polishes all lasted four + days. I am awaiting The Black Knight which is a heavily glittered jet black polish.

I am so pleased with the fact that this brand is “free” and durable. Not something that “free” polishes can usually claim. The colors are cutting edge and the ladies realize it is not OPI as I had friends and strangers ask me what brand of polish I was wearing. It is a stand out brand that I love, love, love.

Give your natural nails a healthy treat ( or use on your acrylics because the colors are great). I think you are going to be very surprised.

Lady of Grand Food Tour

Lady of Grand Food Tours of the LES

Yesterday I was lucky enough to be part of a great tour of the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It was a food tasting tour with Jolie Warbet of Lady of Grand Food Tours. Jolie is the actual Lady of Grand, and is the brains and beauty behind the concept.
Jolie was born on Grand St. in the LES and as a child moved to New Jersey, but as soon as she could, she returned to the street she loved. As time went by her friends gave her the nick name “The Lady of Grand” because she was always giving people history of the area, and taking them around to check out all the hidden gems of the neighborhood. Specifically she enjoyed showing people her favorite food spots, so when the opportunity presented itself to actually turn her passion into a career she took it. What was born of that was Lady of Grand Food Tours.

The tour meets at The Essex Street Market, and it’s first few stops are there. We first got to try the Spinach Pie at Boubouki. A tiny kitchen turning out amazing home made Greek food. The owner is an inspiration to food lovers everywhere. She left an office job, and started to cook HER food for a living! BRAVO! Best Spinach Pie I have ever had, and a little bit of a great Tomato Bread too!

Our next stop in The Essex Street Market was NI Japanese Delicacies. They are a husband and wife team that create mostly vegetarian dishes, that are new to a lot of American palates. What we got to try, and what was probably my favorite taste of the tour, was the Octopus Brow Rice Balls. Typically I am not a fan of the Italian style Rice Balls, but these were sweet and firm, with a wonderful flavor. If you like octopus these are a must!

Next stop was the famous Brooklyn Taco. Maybe not quite a hidden gem for New Yorkers, but for an out of towner, it’s a huge find! We got to have their Guaco Taco, which I had before at The Hester Street Fair. It is all the goodness of Guacamole and Chips, but in a warm, soft corn torilla. A MUST if you get to the market or the fair.

After our taco we headed out to do a little walking and Jolie started to give us a little history of the hood as we strolled the street. Before you knew it we were able to get out of the rain and have a little beer to wash down the food we had been sampling. Jolie took us to Top Hops. A local shop that offers beers on tap as well as rows and rows of refrigerators that total more than 700 beers organized by the state they came from. So say you are from Maine, you can your friends can find a six pack of your fave local beer and share it at the bar or take it back to your hotel. Or, what would be better is to get some beers from around the country and set up your own tasting. The guys at Top Hops would be happy to help you out with that.

On we went to a 5 week old shop called Malt & Mold.

It’s a shop that sells beer, but also cheese, Knish, pickles, and mustard. Oh, also chocolate, and bread, and truffle oils, and cured meats. This place sells a little bit of everything, and even though it is a little bit out of the way, it’s worth the trip. Look at this Knish with pastrami. Not something I would normally seek out, but WOW!
I have to say though… I am sure this is not their goal, but they have a salted caramel there that is CRAZY good!!! It was my fave thing I had there!

Our last stop was for something sweet. A little bit of France that landed right in the middle of the LES. It’s Christian Vautier Le Concept. A little shop that is full of things that will do nothing but make you smile. I had a dark chocolate covered lemon and a Tequila Truffle. I wanted more, but was so full from all the other food from the last hour and a half.

Sadly that was the end of the tour…

Although all the food was great, and the neighborhood is always a welcoming place, the best part of this tour was the guide and the people. Jolie creates a vibe where you feel comfortable, and that leads to people talking to each other. I knew no one on this tour, but have come home with 3 more Facebook friends and a few more followers on twitter. That’s what food is for; to bring people together, and Lady Of Grand Food Tours is a great example of that point.
If you are coming to NYC you would be smart to check it out. At 50 bucks per person, it more filling than a typical brunch (and cheaper!). Not only that, but you will have more fun!Here are all the links you need;

Clarisonic

I wrote a post a while ago about a cleanser, Eve Lom, that I love and use at least four times a week. I had mentioned that I also use something else to cleanse and the Clarisonic is it.

Clarisonic is a waterproof, rechargeable skin cleansing system. It is a patented sonic technology that gently removes the impurities traditional cleansing methods leave behind. It cleans pores, loosening dirt, makeup and oil as it reduces the appearance of pores and wrinkles. Clarisonic cleansing is proven to remove six times more makeup then traditional manual cleansing with finger pads, allowing for serums and moisturizers to absorb better. It is so gentle that it can be used twice a day.

To use the Clarisonic, charge for 24 hours prior to first use. Then remove your eye makeup. I skip this step as I just wet my face and use Purity Made Simple by Philosophy which I put all over my face and eyes (use with your favorite cleanser ) – DO NOT USE the Clarisonic on your eyes.

Wet the brush head, press on/off button and gently massage the face in small circular motions, beginning on the forehead and moving to the nose, chin and cheeks. Hold the brush head flush to your skin, but don’t press too hard or you will impede the motion of the brush and not get the full benefit of the Clarisonic. The Clarisonic will let you know when the cleansing minute is up. The brush head should be replaced every three to four months.

Rinse and pat dry and your skin is now ready for your favorite skincare products.

I purchased the Clarisonic Face and Body over five years ago and this uses a cradle to charge. It is about 7” long and came with sensitive, normal and body brush heads. I use the normal brush and when I need to replace, that is what I purchase. I have never used the Clarsonic on my body except for the decollete so I really can’t speak to how it works. This brush has low, normal and high power settings.

I love the way my face feels after I use the Clarisonic. It is clean without being stripped, feels very smooth and looks dewy. All good for this girl! As I mentioned before, I am 60 years old and I have no wrinkles and I really believe that the Clarisonic is part of the reason why. It is like having a facial at home everyday and that is not a bad thing for your face.

I loved it so much that last December I purchased another, Clarisonic Mia 2, which is a little under 6” inches long. It comes with a link charger, which saves room on the vanity, and a travel case. This brush has two speeds, low and normal.

I use the Clarisonic every morning in the shower and my makeup practically puts itself on as my skin is just so clean and smooth.

No matter what else you use on your skin, this is the starting place. I highly encourage you to give it a try and I know you will be hooked like so many other people.

Yes, it is an investment, but I am positive you will start saving money immediately as you will be using much less of your favorite skincare line to produce the results that you are looking for. Nothing works if your skin is not really clean.

Borghese has been in the beauty industry for a very long time, but I don’t think it is a line that comes quickly to mind.

I feel that it is old school, but I do like a few of their products. Today I would just like to write a few lines about Splendore.

Splendore gives “your body a flawless look with lightweight, moisturizing shimmer lotion. the subtle shimmer brightens and flatters any skin tone leaving gorgeous radiance. Minor skin imperfections are camouflaged and skin tone appears more even.” It also has a light tint, much like a tinted moisturizer for the face.

The shimmer is actually created by light diffusing mica; so, it really is a shimmer not glitter.

I have used this product every Summer for, well, I can’t remember how long. I have not done sun in thirteen years and five years ago I was diagnosed with melanoma. I get a little sun when I walk my dogs and that is it. Really.

I do not use faux tanning products. I think I have tried them all, but they smell, they stain, they streak, they turn orange and I don’t care how inexpensive or expensive the brand is or who applies it to your body, it still looks like it is out of the bottle. Faux is just that, fake.

Splendore does a great job of making my legs and arms look sun kissed and the shimmer is beautiful in the light and awesome in lowlights. Compliments always abound and no sun damage.
